Winter sun destinations with a difference

 

Some like it hot all year round - if this applies to you, a winter sun destination will probably be on the cards.  However, if the thought of lounging on a beach all day leaves you feeling a little jaded, you'll be looking for a somewhere with a little more on offer than simply sea and sand. With that in mind, whether you're a culture vulture, wine-lover, golfing fanatic or party animal, we have selected the best places for those who want a bit of ‘get up and go' this winter.

For culture vultures

Visit: Egypt

If you like your sun with a hint of culture, nothing can compare to Egypt's mind-blowing pyramids, ancient tombs, temples and hieroglyphics. Luxor is warm but bearable at this time of year, and here you can experience such delights as the Valleys of the Kings and Queens or take a scenic cruise down the infamous River Nile. If after all that you're worn out, head to the popular Sharm El Sheikh resort for some R&R – the Jolie Ville Resort is a winner.

For wine (and wildlife) lovers

You can choose from endless wine tasting and vineyard tours in the rugged Wineland peaks, then sober up while gazing out at the breathtaking scenery. South Africa is also perfect for wildlife spotting, particularly the secluded Krugar Park, and if you head to the wetlands of St Lucia, you can even spot hippos! Just don't get too close…

For golf enthusiasts

Visit: Spain

Southern Spain is bursting with phenomenal golfing possibilities for the golf aficionado, as well as being blessed with almost year-round sunshine. If catching a few rays whilst playing a round is a must, the best place to head is the Murcia region on the Costa Blanca, home to Europe's most famous golf resort - La Manga . You will not fail to be impressed by its credentials; three championship courses, continual winner of European Golf Resort of the Year, and more hours of sunshine per annum than any other resort on the continent. Better not forget your sunscreen!

For party animals

Visit: Miami

A hedonist's heaven, Miami is not only blessed with sunny weather this time of year, but boasts a buzzing night scene to satisfy even the most insatiable party-goer. Swarming with cool, hip young things, you will be spoilt for choice thanks to the endless restaurants, bars, nightclubs and casinos on offer, in fact, this is just the sort of place for a wild and debauched long weekend away – its just a shame about the lengthy flight journey!

For the unashamed sun-worshipper

If you can think of nothing more relaxing than chilling on a sun-drenched beach this winter, head to the magnificent Caribbean island of Anguilla, where the beaches are screen-saver worthy and the cocktails are a-flowing. Other than good food and numerous snorkelling and diving opportunities, there are little other distractions if all you want to achieve is a perfect suntan – bliss!
